Three cooked steaks = 12 food hearts which is much greater than bread's 2.5. A side-note on animal breeding, cows are the best animal to breed as they give you steaks along with leather which can be crafted into armor. Having a pack of 1* or 2* wolves - lets say 10 - following you around should reduce the dangers significantly. Plains - tame and breed lox ASAP - probably the easiest animal to tame and the most useful for area defense even into the Mistlands.
